Deep pits and grooves are found on the chewing surfaces of all back teeth (molars and pre molars). These are called ‘fissures’ and are usually so narrow that no matter how well you clean these teeth they are still a common site for decay.
The benefit of a fissure sealant is that it coats the deep pits and fissures with composite resin in order to protect the tooth. It creates a protective layer which blocks the bacteria from getting into the tiny grooves. No drilling is involved and it is a simple and quick procedure.
